In May 2010, Sergio joined CD San Roque as the manager on a three year deal but soon moved on to AD Cueta in the Segunda Division B. In 2012, Tito Vilanova took over as head coach of FC Barcelona and Sergio was named as his assistant manager. However, a month later, he signed on with Segunda Division side UD Las Palmas as their head coach. His premier season as full time manager saw his team finish the league in sixth with a defeat to eventually promoted UD Almeria.
His next assignment saw him move to Morocco after he signed for Moghreb Tetouan before eventually joining FC Goa. Sergio insists that his primary focus is to achieve results on the pitch and in conjunction with assistant coach, Derrick Perreira, he will look to help the club achieve its main target of winning the Indian Super League.
